The wife of Yao Ming, Ye Li is preggers! Why does everyone care where they have the baby?

Yao and Ye Li, in a commerical shoot in....H-town, or Houston.

I think that it’s because she is 6’2″ and he is 7’6″.  China is working on their superiority game.  If the child is born here, then it is an American citizen.  The child can have dual citizenship, but people don’t really want to hear about that.

Fan furore that Yao’s baby could be American

BEIJING — China’s star NBA centre Yao Ming can do no wrong on the court in the eyes of basketball fans, but some diehards are crying foul over the possibility that his firstborn could have an American passport.

Yao and his wife have headed back to the United States, where he plays for the Houston Rockets, ahead of the birth of their first child, which is reportedly due sometime between May and July.

You can see what Yao saw in her....Plus she is/was a baller on the National Team

If the child is born in the United States, he or she will automatically be considered an American citizen — a prospect that some nervous fans say could potentially deprive China of a new basketball superstar.

“This will not only be a huge loss to Chinese basketball but, as far as feelings are concerned, will be something very difficult for Chinese fans to accept,” the Chongqing Business Daily said, citing angry online comments.

I am sure that Yao and Ye Li love their country, love their hometown of Shanghai, but please.  Both places are awesome, but he is a player in the NBA, which is an American League and wouldn’t you want him playing in the best league in the world?  You could woo him back to play for the Sharks, but how does that help him, or China as a country?  Their feelings are not important in this situation, or really any situation.  Yao has his family to think of first.

But on popular web portal sina.com, some users expressed support over the possibility of an American Yao.

“To not become an American is stupid… China is a paradise for officials, but hell for ordinary people,” said a poster named Limin.

Another user from Shanghai named Kekeweiqi said: “We have no right to interfere in the future of baby Yao. When baby Yao grows up, he/she will have the right to choose his/her own nationality and occupation.”

Yao and his wife have been in China for several months as the centre recovers from a broken foot that has forced him out for the entire NBA season and helps to manage the Shanghai Sharks, his former team which he now owns.

Yao’s agent, Zhang Mingji, said the place of birth of the child was a “family matter” and was not an issue up for debate, the Chongqing paper said.

For once, I agree with the agent.  It really is not my business or anyone else.  Who really cares? 6 billion Chinese do…

Well if the child is born in the US and it happens to be a male. Then in all likelihood they’ll want to claim it as not only a future prospect for the NBA but also for the US Olympic team in 2030 ? How ’bout them apples then ? That’ll no doubt p_ss of the Chinese if Yao were to allow that !

Furthermore, will the Chinese government be paying Yao and his wife it’s a boy child ? I believe that’s still a custom there ,isn’t it ?

Yes, it is a family decision. Whichever country / continent she does decide to have the kid…I just hope they have good drugs. With her at 6+ feet, and the baby’s daddy at 7+ feet, YIKES. She’ll need some good drugs after that birth. I feel for her.
